Talk Title: A Love Story Between Game And Player In Six Acts

When a game meets a suitable player, both enter into a relationship. It’s equal, exciting, fragile and requires sufficient effort, seriousness and the right feeling for the needs of the partner at all times. Heße will describe the relationship between game and player in six steps, from the very first match to the happy or unhappy ending. Whether it becomes a one-night stand, an affair or an everlasting love is up to us, without being in control. Many concepts, prototypes, or released video games fail at one of these stages. In his lecture, he will share tips and best practices on how to build a healthy relationship between the game and its players right from the start of a new project, and how to respond when a crisis arises.

The Speaker:
Sebastian Heße worked as a director in the film industry for over 10 years, where he realized long, short, art and commercial film. His focus on storytelling and lifelong passion for video games made him do the step, leaving the film industry behind and facing the challenges of interactive storytelling. After first B2B productions, they brought CRITICAL RABBIT to life and published their first story-driven game FALL OF PORCUPINE in June 2023. Games are unique in comparison with other storytelling media and he’s motivated by figuring out new, innovative and immersive ways to write, develop and tell stories. Next to several nominations and awards, he won the Deutscher Entwicklerpreis 2023 for Best Story and was nominated for Best Story and Best German Game at the Deutscher Computerspielpreis 2024.
