On Tuesday, April 16, we start our series of guest lectures this semester with illustrator and motion designer Tobias Wüstefeld. It will again be possible to listen to the lecture on site at the Cologne Game Lab or to join in virtually via Zoom.

In his talk titled “Control and Being Controlled: From User to Creator of Generative AI” Tobias will reveal how he integrated AI across the design process, from drafts to final touches, and address the critical choices and uncertainties faced when using generative AI. Through case studies spanning from initial design drafts, animation, enhancing texture details, to programming as a non-programmer, he will illustrate diverse applications of AI. He’ll examine AI’s profound influence on design, from altering creative thought to impacting execution, stressing the need for a deliberate stance towards these technologies. How can we harmonize innovative AI applications with traditional skills, positioning this balance as essential for those looking to actively shape the future rather than be shaped by it.

Tobias Wüstefeld is an illustrator and motion designer based in Hamburg. With a keen interest in technical exploration, he works with both analog techniques and digital tools, including 3D software, 3D scanning, and VR technologies. Since 2012, he has also been exploring the field of artificial intelligence. Recently, his perspective has become increasingly critical as he searches for sustainable ways to engage with generative AI. His commitment is further demonstrated by his active participation in the AI task force of the Illustrators Organization Germany.
