We are delighted to announce the release of the inaugural issue of Kaludoscope (find Issue 01 here), a new student-led journal dedicated to game studies.

Created by students for students and emerging scholars, Kaludoscope offers a platform to share original research, develop editorial and peer review experience, and showcase the diverse perspectives on games and play emerging from the CGL community. Blending the spirit of academic inquiry with an accessible, essayistic writing style, the journal explores games from historical, theoretical, aesthetic, political, and cultural perspectives.

The title Kaludoscope combines the words kaleidoscope and ludus to reflect the journal’s ambition: to view games through constantly shifting perspectives rather than a single fixed lens. As the editorial team writes in the introduction, games deserve to be examined from many different angles, opening an ongoing conversation that will continue to grow with future editions.

The first issue was edited by Marie Taeger and Rafael Pankov, both M.A. students in Digital Games at CGL. The publication was illustrated and designed by Rafael Pankov under the editorial mentorship of Prof. Dr. Sonia Fizek, with additional support from Dr. André Czauderna and Dr. Laura Frings.

Kaludoscope is available both as a digital publication and in a printed edition at the Cologne Game Lab, where students and staff can browse through the beautifully designed first issue.

We warmly congratulate everyone involved on this fantastic achievement and look forward to many future editions of Kaludoscope.
