Game Changer – Gaming Technology for Space

Abstract:
Gaming technologies have reached an impressive level of sophistication and performance, created by a highly creative and committed community. On the other hand many technologies have a substantial potential for application in the space domain, thinking for instance of user interfaces, group processes, virtual / immersive operations and design tasks, as well as high-performance simulation topics. The presentation introduces to ESA and its space safety programme, shows potential applications areas, and gives some insight on gaming applications for moon mission analysis and space safety outreach and communications”

About Reinhold Bertrand:
Prof. Dr. Reinhold Bertrand studied aerospace engineering at the University of Stuttgart and ISAE (formerly ENSAE) in Toulouse, graduating in 1991. After early experience in industry, he returned to Stuttgart as a research associate and completed his PhD on the conceptual design and simulation of space stations. He later led the Space Systems Design and Robotics division at Hoerner & Sulger GmbH.

In 2004, he joined the European Space Agency (ESA) in Darmstadt, where he currently works as Senior Research and Technology Manager at the ESA Space Safety Program Office, dedicated to protecting our planet, its people and critical infrastructure from natural threats from space as well as humanmade ones. Since 2015, he has been teaching “Fundamentals of Space Systems” at TU Darmstadt.
