We’re proud to share that the research report of the Horizon Europe project STRATEGIES – Sustainable Transition for Europe’s Game Industries, co-authored by Cologne Game Lab / TH Köln researchers, has been featured on the website of the Playing for the Planet Alliance, an initiative supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Playing for the Planet unites major actors from the global games industry to take action on sustainability — from reducing carbon emissions to embedding environmental themes into games. Facilitated by UNEP, the alliance promotes collaboration, innovation, and shared learning to drive meaningful environmental progress across the industry.

The STRATEGIES project aims to empower Europe’s game industries to act as key drivers of sustainable innovation, contributing to the goals of the European Green Deal. The consortium of 15 partners from nine European countries combines academic, industrial, and policy expertise to develop business model analyses, policy recommendations, carbon accounting tools, and design strategies for sustainability in game development.

The featured baseline report, co-authored by Prof. Dr. Sonia Fizek (Work Package 2 Lead) and Dr. Ruth Dorothea Eggel (Postdoctoral Researcher) from Cologne Game Lab, provides a comprehensive overview of the environmental and social sustainability landscape of the European video game and board game industries. It maps existing frameworks, initiatives, and policies, while also highlighting challenges related to work culture, diversity, and well-being.
