The Environmental Concept Art Process and Visual Design of Snow White in Cyberpunk

The research in Can Başdogan‘s master’s thesis was dedicated to the increased importance of environmental concept art in audio-visual media. As productions aim for greater visual richness to enhance immersive experiences, the production timelines increase. To balance visual quality with cost efficiency, concept artists with diverse specializations, are crucial in media such as films, animations, and video games.

The thesis explored the role of environmental concept art, beginning with an overview of concept art, artist roles, and the digital game production process. It then focused on defining environmental concept art, its types (e.g., keyframes, layout and set design, mood variations), and the creative process, which includes mood boarding, sketching, blocking out, modeling, and paint overs. The research also introduced the use of AI image generators in concept art and applied these insights to the thesis project: “Visual Design of Snow White in Cyberpunk.”

The story is set in the 22nd century. After a groundbreaking technological surge, the Waldeck Corporation emerged as the leading tech giant across the globe. They revolutionized the world with their cutting-edge advancements in AI, cybernetics, nano medical technology, immersive entertainment systems, and particle weaponry. But it was during the 4th European War that Waldeck truly etched its name into history, selling cybernetics arms and creating cyborg soldiers for every faction.

But what happened to all the cyborg soldiers after the war was over? Learn the full story in the project documentation: https://heyzine.com/flip-book/e28b725fc8.html#page/1

The environmental concept art was created using Blender, along with several commercial plug-ins. The supporting character portraits were created using a blend of techniques, including photobashing Leondo AI-generated images with Metahumans.
