Join our next and also last session of our lecture series on December 5, 6.00-7.30 pm!

We are looking forward to welcoming Dr. Meike Eckstein (Zürcher Hochschule der Künste) and her talk on “Evidence and Misprints: Findings and Errors in Research and Design”. We are also very glad to welcome Vice Dean for Research & Transfer Prof. Dr. Carolin Höfler (Köln International School of Design) with her lecture on “Unwiederholbare Experimente. Einblicke in Praktiken zwischen Gestaltung und Wissenschaft“.

Both contributions deal with research practices and knowledge production in design processes and their theoretical reflection.

Dr. Meike Eckstein (Zürcher Hochschule der Künste)
Evidence and Misprints: Findings and Errors in Research and Design (talk will be held in English)
Design is not only a tool to create artefacts, it is also a tool to create evidence. In my research I build experimental settings. In these settings I invite test persons. On the one hand they are passive and follow the instructions. On the other hand they are active elements of the setting. As part of the experimental setting they transmit research into research objects. Ideally the research objects turn into evidence. But the process is more frustrating and more complicated. It is messy and full of errors and dead ends. In my contribution I will reflect on the mechanism of research and the research object. I will present lots of colourful and unexpected prints, drawings and photographs. I will show different experimental settings producing evidence and misprints. I will show things gone right and things gone very wrong.

Prof. Dr. Carolin Höfler (KISD)
Unwiederholbare Experimente. Einblicke in Praktiken zwischen Gestaltung und Wissenschaft
In her talk, Prof. Dr. Höfler responds to the first lecture by Dr. Meike Eckstein. It will be held in German.

The event will take place in room 11 of TH Köln, KISD / CICS (Ubierring 40, ground floor). It is open to the public and free of charge and afterwards, we’d like to invite you to have a hot wine to mark the occasion of the final edition of our lecture series.

The “Ringvorlesung” is an annual series of lectures that explores the thematic field of research in cultural studies, in particular using the example of doctoral studies being developed at the faculty.

The aim is to identify peculiarities and broader points of contact of doctoral studies at the TH Köln with regard to aspects such as interdisciplinarity, internationality, funding and research concepts. To this end, doctoral candidates and professors as well as external scientists will present their projects and shed light on them with regard to the above-mentioned aspects. The lecture series is a project of the institutes CGL, CICS and KISD and is planned as a prelude for the introduction of further joint research formats.

It is open to the public and free of charge. Following each evening there will be the opportunity for exchange over drinks and snacks. The lectures will be held on mondays at 6.00 pm from October 17 to December 5, 2022. The venue is TH Köln, KISD / CICS, Ubierring 40, 50678 Cologne, Germany.
